Cat ownership reaches tens of millions of American homes, while the wider pet economy continues to make room for practical products, veterinary care, and shared routines at home. These figures are useful context, not a promise about any individual cat or household.

APPA reports this as 53 million cat-owning homes. Survey method and timing differ from AVMA's, so the two estimates should not be treated as interchangeable.

APPA also reports $34.4 billion in supplies, live animals, and over-the-counter medicine for that year.

We use public, primary-source figures from the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Pet Products Association. Each statistic links directly to its original source. The figures are presented exactly as those organizations report them, with the year shown beside each source.
The AVMA's 2026 figures come from an opt-in online survey conducted in early spring 2026, completed by 7,547 people and weighted to U.S. population and Census household information. APPA's ownership figures come from its 2025 National Pet Owners Survey. Different organizations use different survey samples and methods, which is why their household estimates may not match exactly.
We will review these sources again in November 2026, or earlier if a primary source releases a newer annual update.
